Sega was born when developers decided it was time to stop creating games for other consoles, and make a console of their own to create games for. Thus, the Sega Master System was born. This console rivaled the ever popular Nintendo system, and flopped in the United States.
 Although the United States didn’t buy into the Sega Master System, Japan and Europe did, and it brought in enough revenue to start work on the Sega Genesis. The Genesis was by far the fastest console gaming product on the market at the time of its release.
Games like Sonic the Hedgehog and EA Sports titles made the Sega Genesis hugely popular in the United States. But in the end, Nintendo overpowered the popularity with the release of the Super NES and titles like Donkey Kong.
After multiple other attempts to survive in the gaming console world of sales, Sega at last continues to create games for other consoles and has stopped production of any consoles themselves. That’s not to say Sega didn’t try, that’s for sure.
The Sega cd was a unit that sat under the console and is an add-on for the Sega Megadrive. This was promoted to provide more colors to the Sega system than other systems. Soon it was considered a failure because of its high price and low sales.
With the many attempts on offering gaming consoles to consumers, we saw the Sega Dreamcast and the Sega Saturn make their debut before vanishing. The Sega Game gear came and went as well, which was meant to compete with the Nintendo Gamecube but simply drained batteries so fast they couldn’t keep up in sales.
In the end, we’ve seen many great things from Sega, and Sega has been thought of as the ones to open the world to console gaming. They’re still doing it today in the form of creating awesome games that we all love to play. Maybe a time in the future will bring a new Sega system, but for now there simply doesn’t seem to be room for the competition. |
